Functional Medicine Built Around Your Labs
Dr. James Bergtold, DC has practiced in Naples for 25+ years and has treated more than 5,000 patients. His wellness care pairs lab-informed nutrition, movement and lifestyle guidance with maintenance chiropractic adjustments. He works within a chiropractic scope of practice and coordinates with your primary care physician, who remains responsible for diagnosing disease and for any medication decisions.
When Fatigue and Pain Call for Functional Medicine
You do everything you have been told to do and still feel worn out. Mornings start stiff, energy falls off a cliff by mid-afternoon, and weight that used to come off with a few weeks of effort no longer moves. Bloodwork comes back described as normal, yet nothing about how you feel is normal. Aches move around. Sleep stays shallow. Many of our Naples patients arrive after years of collecting one prescription at a time, with no one stepping back to look at the whole picture.
Wellness care here starts by putting the pieces on one table: your history, your exam findings, how you move, and the numbers on your lab reports. From there Dr. Bergtold builds a practical plan around food, hydration, sleep, stress and progressive exercise, supported by maintenance adjustments that keep you moving well. The work is lifestyle guidance inside a chiropractic scope of practice, coordinated with the physician who manages your medical care. Nothing here replaces that relationship.
What Is Functional Medicine?
A Root-Cause View of Your Health
Functional medicine is a root-cause approach that looks at nutrition, sleep, stress, movement and lab data together rather than one symptom at a time. At our Naples clinic it is lab-informed lifestyle guidance delivered within a chiropractic scope of practice, with maintenance adjustments. It is not the diagnosis or treatment of disease.
Care starts with a full history and a review of lab work such as glucose, A1c, lipids, inflammatory markers and thyroid studies. Dr. Bergtold reads those numbers beside your exam findings, then sets food, movement and sleep targets. Anything outside chiropractic scope goes to your physician. The plan sits inside our broader wellness care in Naples.

Risks and Safety Considerations
What to Know
Common Effects of Lifestyle Change
Most people tolerate dietary and activity changes well. Short-term effects can include headaches, fatigue, digestive changes or hunger during the first one to two weeks of a dietary shift, and muscle soreness for a few days when new exercise is introduced. These typically settle as the body adapts.
Risks to Take Seriously
The two real risks in wellness care are delaying medical evaluation and unsupervised supplement use. Supplements can interact with prescriptions: as the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements documents, products such as vitamin K, St. John's wort and high-dose fish oil interact with common medications. Bring every supplement to your physician and pharmacist before starting it. Aggressive dietary restriction is also a risk for anyone who is pregnant, underweight, diabetic on medication, or has a history of disordered eating.
Scope of Practice
Dr. Bergtold is a chiropractor, not a physician. He does not diagnose or treat disease, does not order or interpret care outside chiropractic scope as medical advice, and does not prescribe, stop or adjust medication. Wellness care here is lifestyle, nutrition and movement guidance that runs alongside your medical care and never in place of it.
Functional Medicine Cost in Naples
Pricing and Payment Options
How Much Does Functional Medicine Cost in Naples?
Cost depends on how much the first visit covers, whether on-site X-ray imaging is needed, how many follow-up and recheck visits your plan includes, and whether maintenance adjustments are bundled with the coaching. Lab work billed by an outside laboratory or ordered through your physician is separate from what our office charges. A short plan focused on one or two habits costs far less than a six-month program with repeat rechecks. Exact pricing is reviewed with you before any care begins.
Insurance and Coverage
We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Medicare, Medicare Advantage, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna. Chiropractic visits are often covered while lifestyle coaching and wellness counseling frequently are not, and coverage varies by plan and diagnosis. Our office verifies your benefits and tells you in plain terms what is covered and what is self-pay before you commit.
Flexible Payment Options
- CareCredit - healthcare financing that spreads a care plan across monthly payments
- Self-pay plans - transparent per-visit and per-plan pricing when coverage does not apply

Frequently Asked Questions About Functional Medicine
Your Questions Answered
How much does functional medicine cost in Naples?
Cost depends on the length of your first visit, whether imaging is needed and how many rechecks your plan includes, so we quote it after your consultation. Outside lab fees are billed separately. We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna, and CareCredit is available. Call (239) 593-6788 for a figure for your case.
How long does it take to see results?
Most patients notice the first changes in two to four weeks, usually steadier energy, better sleep or easier mornings. Shifts in weight, activity tolerance and lab markers generally take three to six months of consistent habits. Dr. Bergtold rechecks at four to six weeks so progress is measured rather than assumed.
Does a chiropractor practicing functional medicine replace my doctor?
No. Dr. Bergtold is a chiropractor, not a physician. He provides lab-informed lifestyle, nutrition and movement guidance within a chiropractic scope of practice and coordinates with your physician, who continues to diagnose conditions, order treatment and manage medication. Wellness care runs alongside your medical care, never in place of it.
Can you order or prescribe medication?
No. We do not prescribe, stop or adjust any medication, and we will not tell you to change a prescription. If your plan raises a question about a medication or a supplement interaction, we send you back to your prescribing physician or pharmacist with that question in writing so the decision stays with them.
What lab tests do you look at?
We typically review markers such as fasting glucose, A1c, a lipid panel, inflammatory markers, thyroid studies and vitamin D. Most patients already have recent bloodwork from their physician, and we start there. When a useful test is missing, we discuss it with you and with your physician rather than working around them.
Is functional medicine care painful?
No. The visits themselves involve conversation, a physical and movement exam and, when included, a maintenance chiropractic adjustment. Adjustments are generally comfortable, and mild soreness for a day is the most common after-effect. New exercise can leave you sore for a few days, which we plan for by starting small.
How often will I need to come in?
A typical plan starts with an initial visit, a recheck at four to six weeks and then follow-ups every four to twelve weeks depending on your goals. Maintenance adjustments may run on a separate schedule. The pace is set by what you are working on and by how you respond, not by a fixed package.
What is the difference between this and seeing a dietitian?
Nutritional counseling focuses on diet alone. Our wellness care looks at diet alongside movement quality, sleep, stress and spinal function, then coordinates all of it in one plan with maintenance adjustments. Patients who need intensive medical nutrition therapy are still best served by a registered dietitian, and we refer when that is the case.
Do I need to take supplements?
Not necessarily. Food, sleep, activity and stress habits do most of the work, and we would rather fix those than sell you a shelf of bottles. If a supplement is worth discussing, we say why and ask you to clear it with your physician or pharmacist first, since supplements can interact with prescription medication.
Can wellness care help with nerve symptoms like numbness?
It can support them. Lifestyle factors such as blood sugar control, activity and weight influence nerve health, so those become part of the plan. Diagnosing the cause of numbness is a medical evaluation, so we work with your physician while addressing the mechanical and lifestyle contributors on our side of the line.
Is functional medicine care appropriate for seniors?
Yes, and many of our Naples wellness patients are older adults. Plans are adjusted for medication lists, bone density, balance and joint condition, and exercise starts at a level you can actually hold. Body composition goals sometimes pair with Emsculpt Neo, and pelvic symptoms with pelvic floor therapy.
Can I combine wellness care with other treatments here?
Yes, and most patients do. Lifestyle coaching pairs naturally with maintenance adjustments, and with pelvic floor therapy with Emsella or laser and shockwave therapy for pain. Dr. Bergtold sequences them so you are not doing everything at once, and reviews the whole plan at each recheck.
